Recovery position

The recovery position is used after return of normal circulation and breathing after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or if the victim is unconscious and breathing, with no other life-threatening conditions. The recovery position maintains a clear and patent airway, in case of vomiting or fluid that can cause the victim to choke or aspirate.

  1. Roll victim his or her side, arms and upper leg at right angles to keep victim from lying flat on his or her front.
  2. Place upper hand under the head to support it.
  3. Tilt head back and thrust jaw open to open airway.
  4. Monitor breathing and pulse until medical help arrives.
  5. Turn to other side after half an hour.
